Accessibility

Our commitment
We want everyone to be able to track their work hours, pay and money in Hourwallet. This page describes how Hourwallet works with the accessibility features of Apple devices, how to turn those features on, and where the app does not fully support them.
It applies to Hourwallet 2.1 and later on iPhone (iOS 18 or later), iPad and Apple Watch. Earlier versions do not include some of the improvements described here.
What is supported on iPhone and iPad
- VoiceOver. Buttons, fields, amounts and rows have spoken labels. The charts in Statistics and Wallet offer an audio graph, so you can hear a chart as well as read its values. Rows that you can swipe, such as entries and records, also offer their actions through VoiceOver's actions menu, so no gesture is required.
- Voice Control. The names you can say match the text shown on screen, so "Tap Save" works as expected. Amount fields, rows, account cards and date pills answer to the text they show.
- Larger Text. Hourwallet follows the text size you choose in iOS, up to the largest accessibility sizes. Layouts wrap and grow instead of cutting text off, and large amounts move onto their own line. At the largest sizes the month calendar is replaced by a list of days, because a seven-column grid cannot hold very large numbers. Bars that cannot grow, such as the running-session bar, support the Large Content Viewer: touch and hold the bar to see it enlarged.
- Dark Mode. The app follows the system appearance, or you can choose Light, Dark or System in the app. Dark has two styles: Dim, a soft dark grey, and True Black, pure black that suits OLED screens.
- Contrast. Text in the app's own screens is designed to reach a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against the surface it sits on, in light and dark mode and with every accent colour. Hourwallet also honours Increase Contrast, which uses stronger borders and colours, and Reduce Transparency. The Appearance screen shows whether your chosen accent colour is readable and its contrast ratio.
- Information is not shown by colour alone. Income and expense carry plus and minus signs and symbols, selected options show a checkmark, the overtime part of the progress ring uses a dashed line, and chart series are named beside the bars.
- Reduce Motion. The animations and transitions Hourwallet draws itself, such as sliding bars, rolling numbers and zoom transitions, are replaced by fades or happen instantly when Reduce Motion is on. Advertising is the exception, see Known limitations.
- Bold Text. Hourwallet uses the system text styles, so the system Bold Text setting applies where iOS provides it.
Apple Watch
- VoiceOver. The timer, the progress ring and the amount keypad have labels and values, and the app speaks messages such as "Waiting for iPhone" and when something is rejected.
- Larger Text. The watch app uses the system text styles, scrolls instead of using fixed heights, and follows your Dynamic Type setting, including the accessibility sizes.
- Dark by design. Every screen uses a black background and system colours.
- Not colour alone. Running, paused, waiting, income and expense are shown with symbols and words as well as colour.
- Reduce Motion. The watch app uses system transitions only.
- Privacy with the wrist down. Amounts are replaced by a placeholder, not just dimmed, when the watch is in its low-power state with the wrist down. VoiceOver says the amount is hidden instead of reading it.
- Voice Control is not offered by Apple on Apple Watch.
How to turn the features on
In iOS Settings
- VoiceOver: Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver.
- Voice Control: Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control.
- Larger Text: Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text, then turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes for the biggest steps. You can also add the Text Size control to Control Center.
- Bold Text, Increase Contrast and Reduce Transparency: Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size.
- Reduce Motion: Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Reduce Motion.
- Dark Mode: Settings → Display & Brightness → Dark, or Automatic.
On Apple Watch, open the Settings app on the watch, or the Watch app on your iPhone, and choose Accessibility or Display & Brightness.
In Hourwallet
Open Settings → Appearance.
- Theme: choose Light, Dark or System. System follows your iPhone or iPad.
- Dark Style: choose Dim or True Black. This applies whenever the app is dark.
- Preset Colors and Custom Color: pick the accent colour. A badge under the preview reads "Readable" with the contrast ratio when the colour is easy to read, and warns you when it is not.
Known limitations
- Advertising. Free users see ads supplied by a third party. Hourwallet cannot control their animation, contrast or screen reader behaviour. Hourwallet Pro has no ads, and the Apple Watch app never shows ads.
- Purchase and sign-in screens. The subscription purchase screen is provided by a third-party service, and Sign in with Google and Sign in with Apple are shown by Google and by the system. Their accessibility is controlled by those providers, not by Hourwallet.
- Captions and audio descriptions. Hourwallet has no video or audio content, so captions and audio descriptions do not apply.
- Long translations. In some languages, very long words or labels may wrap onto several lines or sit close to the screen edge at the largest text sizes, mostly on the first-launch and sign-in screens.
- Disabled controls. Controls that are switched off are dimmed, as on other Apple apps, and are not held to the contrast ratio above.
